Kamo Marsh Landscape Architects were engaged by the school board to deliver three new outdoor spaces in conjunction with upgrades to the school's buildings. The landscape design was heavily influenced by the school's new cultural narrative, aiming to create learning opportunities outside the classrooms for all ages and abilities. The school is divided into three Kainga (Vertical Learning Spaces): Whenua, Rangi, and Awa. These names directly relate to the school's narrative, and within each courtyard, the landscape design corresponds directly to the names of the Kainga.
In Whenua’s Courtyard, the design references the land, showcased through feature gabion walls that reflect the different stones found in the landscape, teaching students about stratigraphy. The logs in the paving also represent the remnant forests that once stood in the landscape. Rangi’s Courtyard references the sky, demonstrated by the vertical posts laid out in the constellation of Matariki. This provides an excellent learning opportunity outside the classroom. Awa’s Courtyard references the rivers and streams, incorporating a swale and native plant species into the landscape design.
